Community Assistance Project Application
Group /Organization: City of Lino Lakes
Address:
City /St. /Zip:
Contact Person: Marty Asleson
Local Supervisor: Marty Asleson
Organization & Community Information
la. Briefly describe your group
The City of Lino Lakes comprises 34 square miles located on the edge of the
7 County Metropolitan area. Our city contains square miles of wetland and
water resources.
2a. Overview of Situation
The extensive watershed (Rice Creek), which lies within the city boundaries, coupled
with the extensive development pressure seen within the last decade has raised
concerns with regard to water quality degradation within developed areas and the
discharge of these waters into the watershed. High nutrient levels associated with
naturally occurring phosphorous and nitrogen along with increased surface runoff
has resulted in the degradation of water quality. Point source treatment of these
waters ie.: holding ponds, NERP ponds, golf course ponds, etc. will decrease the
nutrient levels entering the watershed.
2b. Describe research goals & objectives
To determine the effectiveness of using naturally occurring beneficial bacteria to
reduce nutrient levels. To measure Phosphorous, Nitrogen, and BOD levels within
various pond and runoff situations around the metropolitan area. The program, if
approved, would solicit assistance and research areas from the City of Inver Grove
Heights, Anoka County Parks, and several ponded areas on private property.
2c. Describe activities that will accomplish these goals, and proposed timeline.
Research assistant will collect water samples and assist with placement and
monitoring of beneficial bacteria generators. Samples will be collected weekly on
treated ponds and from control ponds located within the general area. Proposed time
from is from late May until September or October.
