• <br />IV. STEWARDSHIP PLAN <br />• <br />Anoka County Parks and Recreation is a natural resource based park and trail system. <br />Therefore, natural resource management and stewardship is an integral element <br />included in the Anoka County Regional Trail System and this master plan. Natural <br />resource management and stewardship for trail corridors is vital in maintaining the trail <br />corridor's aesthetics and identity. To do this, Anoka Cour'shall provide for <br />• The protection, restoration and enhancement f ".plant and animal habitats <br />throughout the corridor; <br />• Protection and improvement of water and soil resource <br />• An increased public awareness /education of the diverse natural resources; and <br />• Encouragement of green and open s3aces along the trail corridrwhere possible <br />to enhance the recreational benefat ;to the community . <br />The areas adjacent to the corridor include parks, residential housing, agricultural fields, <br />pastures, commercial districts candsome light industrial uses. Some of these areas, such <br />as the park land would be suitable for restoration rx -"and stewardship plans. The <br />agricultural fields provide opportunities to restore natural resources along the corridor <br />when development occurs. The areas adjacenttoresidential housing, commercial and <br />light industry would to k be suitable for restoration, although landscape and restoration <br />enhancement long fhe corridor could be possible. <br />The trail traverse ane prime management and stewardship area in Rice Creek Chain of <br />Lakes Park Reserve; Th pork reserve is one of the largest in the seven - county <br />mefr 6 ant area and contains some of the most significant native wildlife habitat and <br />er resources; -in the regi .n, including lakes, wetlands, prairie and woodlands. <br />• <br />considering that ecosystems "Ike dynamic and continually changing over time and <br />ce, an adaptive management approach and framework fits very well with the <br />practice of ecological restoration and stewardship. In the context of ecological <br />restoration, the foil ng adaptive management principles will guide the stewardship <br />plan throughout the'Central Anoka County Regional Trail corridor; <br />1. Problerf`Assessment: <br />Define the scope of degradation to the site, synthesize the existing knowledge <br />about it, and explore the potential outcomes of alternative restoration actions. <br />2. Design: <br />Design a restoration plan and monitoring program that will provide reliable <br />feedback and information about the effectiveness of restoration methods. <br />Page 4 of 14 <br />
