1
1
1
103
COUNCIL MEETING MAY 11, 1987
The first question was, what is the Lino Lakes station being used for
at the present time? Mr. Benjamin explained in addition to District
Memorial's ambulance service, the building is housing one vehicle that
is in the process of being sold. It is an old unit and is being
housed to prevent vandalism.
The second question was, what is the future of the Lino Lakes station?
Mr. Benjamin explained that originally the Fire District planned to
bring this station on line in 1987. However, budget shortfalls have
forced this plan to be delayed. Currently five firemen are being
trained and equipped to operate from this station. Until the budget
can be addressed and the building enlarged with two additional bays,
the fire District will be running as it currently is.
Mr. Benjamin explained that with the dry weather this spring and the
large amount of fires, one half of the District budget is already
spent. He is projecting that the entire 1987 budget will be spent by
October. This means that the District may have to cut back on
purchases of equipment to keep services at the current level.
Mr. Benjamin asked the Council how illegal burns (fires) can be
addressed. Mr. Hawkins explained that the resident can be charged
with violation of City Code and be made to make restitution. Also the
Council could look at an ordinance that would require repayment of
costs in an illegal burn.
The third question asked of Mr. Benjamin was, why is $1000 asked from
each city in the District for amending the relief association bylaws?
Mr. Benjamin explained that a total of $1000 is being asked and
explained that the District would find a competent attorney who would
draft legislation that would be carried through the legislature by our
own representatives. Mayor Benson asked why the legislators themselves
were not drafting the legislation. Mr. Benjamin said the District
will try and approach the problem in this manner but wanted to be sure
that they have enough money to cover any unforeseen costs. He noted
that the other two cities have responded to the request in the
affirmative.
Mr. George Meadows of the DNR from the audience suggested that the
Council refer to Minnesota State Statutes 88.75 regarding relief from
illegal fires.
Mayor Benson asked Mr. Benjamin how everything else was going in the
fire district. Mr. Benjamin said fine as long as it rains. He also
noted that the Lino Lakes fire station may have been premature from a
budget standpoint.
