088
COUNCIL WORK SESSION JUNE 27, 1988
necessary apparatus. Mr. Schumacher asked about mutual aid
contracts with neighboring communities who already have this
apparatus. Mr. Bruen said this would not be appropriate but
Mr. Benjamin said that a fee for service contract would work
for a specific period of time.
Mr. Bruen explained that the Centennial Fire Department will
be appointing a water supply officer. Adequate water supply
is a problem in Lino Lakes and Centerville.
Mr. Bruen explained one of the goals of the Fire Commission
is to convince the risk insurers to upgrade Lino Lakes from
a Class 9 to a Class 7 or hopefully a Class 5 City. This -
will result in lower fire insurance rates to the residents.
The entire program of response for medical emergencies is
being examined by both the Fire District and the Fire
Commission. A policy of who will respond to what will be
formed.
Criteria will be established for the selection of
firefighters. He felt the same requirements that appliy to
all other municipal employees should be applied in the
selection of firefighters. He noted the shortage of
firefighters throughout the state and explained the Fire
District will actively recruit female firefighters. Mr.
Bruen expects that by December, 1988 there will be forty
five (45) firefighters in the Centennial Fire District and
by December, 1992 there will be sixty five (65)
firefighters.
There was discussion regarding the expansion and completion
of station No. 2. This will be the primary station for the
Fire District since it is most centrally located.
Mr. Neal noted a concern regarding the funding of a new
station in the City of Centerville. Mayor Benson noted that
originally Centerville wanted a combination city hall and
fire station. Mr. Bruen felt this would not be a problem.
Mr. Benjamin felt a larger concern for the Fire District may
be that Centerville will not build the fire station where
the District wants it built.
Mayor Benson asked Mr. Schumacher to check the 1988 Budget
to determine the time schedule for completing station No. 2.
He also asked that preliminary plans from the City Engineer
be requested. Mr. Schumacher will let Mr. Bruen know what
PAGE 2
