1 6
CITY COUNCIL COMMUNICATION SESSION FEBRUARY 6, 1993
planned and it could be adapted for community functions.
Mrs. Liljedahl said she felt it was very important who held the
key to this proposal to make sure the changes in the future best
fit the needs of the City. Mr. Wessel said he felt the key was
to be sure a series of choices are available for the City.
Mr. Schneider explained that the developer recognizes all that
has been discussed and he also noted that it is very difficult to
change a use after it is established.
Mr. Mesich, Planning and Zoning Board member said the idea of the
golf course makes him nervous. He felt this is a prime area for
commercial growth. Mr. Wessel explained that it will take a
number of years before Mr. Rehbein's land will develop
commercially. Commercial/industrial growth should be focused on
the north side of the freeway where the infrastructure is
located. Mr. Wessel suggested that the City not rush but watch
and be sure that the City has as much control as possible over
the development of the south side of I35W.
Mrs. Landers, Charter Commission member noted that the south side
of I35W is now residential development. If commercial/industrial
development is proposed for this area, the residents will fight
the proposals. She felt the residents would not fight a golf
course proposal.
Mayor Reinert explained that the City must look for every
opportunity for acceptable development and for additional
revenue. The golf course proposal will be given extensive
review.
Mrs. Farm Park Board member noted that there are established
driving ranges in Lino Lakes and asked if the owners of these
driving ranges have been contacted for their comments. Mr. Al
Robinson, Planning and Zoning Board member noted that he owns one
(1) of the driving ranges which is located on Main Street. He
explained that originally he was opposed to municipalities
getting into private enterprises. However, he noted that this
would be a good source of government revenue and a plus for the
community. Mr. Mesich said he felt it was a positive venture as
long as it makes money.
Mr. Smith, Charter Commission member said he felt there were many
businesses looking at relocating in Lino Lakes. Mr. Wessel said
that he was making more contacts and it is inevitable that
commercial growth will come in the next three (3) to five (5)
years. He noted that many businesses do not know where Lino
Lakes is so it is essential to establish an identity. Putting
PAGE 10
