CENTENNIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT - Superintendent John McClellan
Superintendent McClellan was present to discuss future School
District plans and enrollment projections. He indicated that the
District communicates regularly with the City to determine what is
happening regarding development. He stated that the current market
directs what is happening and the District wants to be in a
position to respond. By 1997 there will be 1200 high school
students, which is the maximum for the existing facility. The
Junior High is full this year with 1300 students. They anticipate
between 1400-1700 new students by the year 2002. Kindergarten
enrollment is anticipated to increase 500+ students per year. For
the 96-97 School Year there will be 6-8 kindergarten classes at St.
Joe's, 6-8 at St. Genevieve's, 2 at Centerville and 2 at Rice Lake.
The District needs additional facilities, the only question is the
size. They currently own 40 acres on Birch Street and 61 off Elm.
The Facilities Committee has been meeting for over a year to
discuss future needs. There will be a public hearing on April llth
to discuss the options with a $35 - 45 Million Bond Issue proposed
for November. The Bond Issue will most likely include a middle
school on Elm Street and some ECFE Facilities for a total of 1800
students. The District is concerned about overbuilding. They
currently have 8 portable classrooms that they would like to
eliminate in the future. They are also considering moving the
District Offices elsewhere.
The Mayor asked if the District had considered other options such
as year round school. Mr. McClellan stated that they had
considered this, however, year round school is hard on buildings,
1
2
