• <br />• <br />COUNCIL WORK SESSION SEPTEMBER 17,1997 <br />The State Legislature adopted legislation effective August 1, 1997 requiring all retailers <br />who sell tobacco or tobacco products to be licensed. Counties will be required to <br />implement a licensing system for retailers located in cities that do not have valid licensing <br />ordinances. Cities wishing to maintain local control over tobacco sales will be required to <br />adopt a licensing ordinance and any city that already has a licensing ordinance will be <br />required to amend it to comply with at least the minimum standards imposed by the new <br />law. <br />Staff is aware of the new requirements and will be obtaining information from the League <br />of Cities and other municipalities who have already adopted the new requirements.
