Council Member Kusterman moved to approve the hiring of Paul Peltier as a paid on-call <br />firefighter. Council Member Rafferty seconded the motion. Motion carried on a voice vote; <br />Council Member Stoesz absent. <br />413) Public Safety Department Update — Chief Swenson provided an update including the <br />following: <br />- Police Officer Position — the application process for the police officer position just closed <br />and there were 71 applications received. There is a good and diverse applicant pool to <br />be used for the hiring process. <br />- Fire Station Development — the warm weather allows the building process to begin early; <br />prepping with the contractor is underway. <br />- Fire Department Recruiting — a special event to provide information on becoming a paid <br />on-call firefighter will be held on March 24. Members of the new department as well as <br />the new station architect will be present to meet, greet and give information. <br />- Firefighter Training — the first group of trainees is finishing and moving through the <br />exam process. The paid on-call group is moving into training with Century College on <br />April 8. Additionally there are six individuals in the process of background checks. <br />Department members have participated in a live burn exercise along with White Bear <br />Lake firefighters. <br />- New Equipment — the department will take custody of the new trucks on April 1; staff is <br />in the process of locating appropriate housing for that equipment. <br />Council Member Roeser noted that the council has discussed having the area state legislators at a <br />council work session to discuss issues such as cameras and pensions. Chief Swenson noted that <br />he has met with the legislators personally and they had a good discussion of issues. Council <br />Member Roeser remarked on the importance of the keeping on top of state level issues that <br />impact the city. <br />Council Member Rafferty suggested that the council should express gratitude to the cities of <br />Woodbury and White Bear Lake for their assistance in housing the new fire vehicles. <br />PUBLIC SERVICES DEPARTMENT REPORT <br />There was no report from the Public Services Department. <br />COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT REPORT <br />6A) Public Hearing; Consider Resolution No. 15-25, Accepting Part II of Wellhead <br />Protection Plan and Authorization to Submit to the Department of Health- City Engineer <br />Hankee introduced Leslee Storlie of WSB Engineering to review the Plan. She noted that the <br />council is being asked to hold the required public hearing this evening regarding the city's <br />Wellhead Protection Plan, Part II, and staff is then requesting authorization to submit the Plan to <br />the State Department of Health. <br />
