AGENDA ITEM 7F <br />STAFF ORIGINATOR: John Powell, City Engineer <br />COUNCIL MEETING DATE: August 13, 2001 <br />TOPIC: Resolution No. 01-117, Receive Bids and Award Construction Contract, <br />2001 Sealcoat Program <br />VOTE REQUIRED: 3/5 Vote Required <br />BACKGROUND: <br />Sealed bids were received and publicly opened at 10:00 a.m. on July 24, 2001. The <br />results of the bid opening are presented below. City Council action is required to award <br />a construction contract to the lowest responsible bidder. <br />Contractor Amount of Bid <br />Pearson Bros., Inc $ 97,559.00 <br />Allied Blacktop Co. $ 98,813.00 <br />Astech Corp. $ 118,025.50 <br />Engineer's Estimate $ 87,425.00 <br />The low bid is approximately 11% above the Engineer's Estimate for this project. Per <br />the attached recommendation, the additional cost is due to a significant increase in the <br />cost of aggregate. Roadways in the project include both new streets that were paved <br />about 2 or 3 years ago, and other City streets on a 5 to 7 year cycle. Based on the unit <br />prices of the low bidder, the funding allocation is as follows: <br />Funding Source Amount <br />Sealcoat and Wearing Course Fund (newer streets) $ 38,043.75 <br />Street Department -Contracted Services (5-7 year cycle) $ 59,515.25 <br />Total $ 97,559.00 <br />The completion date for placement of asphalt and rock chips is August 31, 2001; the <br />completion date for sweepings is September 29, 2001 <br />OPTIONS: <br />1. Return to staff for further review. <br />2. Adopt Resolution Number 01-117, receive bids and award a construction contract to <br />Pearson Bros., Inc. for the 2001 Sealcoat Program. <br />3. Not adopt Resolution No. 01-117. <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />Option No. 2 - Staff recommends adoption of Resolution Number 01-117. <br />
