SECTION 31 23 00 <br />EXCAVATION AND FILL <br />PART 1 GENERAL <br />1.01 SUMMARY <br />A. SECTION INCLUDES <br />1. Excavation and fill for roadways, foundations, channels, ponds, and other areas. <br />2. Structure excavation and backfill, including preparation of an improved soil building <br />pad. <br />B. RELATED SECTIONS <br />1. Section 31 10 00 - Site Clearing. <br />2. Section 31 23 13 - Subgrade Preparation. <br />1.02 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT <br />A. All Work and costs of this Section shall be incidental to the Project and be included in the <br />Lump Sum Base Bid. <br />1.03 REFERENCES <br />A. Minnesota Department of Transportation "Standard Specifications for Construction," <br />2014 Edition (MnDOT Spec) <br />1. 2105 - Excavation and Embankment. <br />2. 3149 - Granular Material. <br />3. 3877 - Topsoil Material. <br />1.04 SUBMITTALS <br />A. Submit the following items consistent with Section 01 33 00 - Submittal Procedures: <br />1. Gradation tests for borrow materials. <br />1.05 DEFINITIONS <br />A. The definitions of the different classifications of excavation and borrow material shall <br />conform to MnDOT Spec. 2105.2, oras modified herein: <br />1. Grading Grade: Bottom of the aggregate base as shown on the Drawings. <br />2. Common Excavation: In locations where the design cross section is in a cut section, <br />common excavation shall be classified as all excavation above the grading grade. In <br />areas where the design cross section is in a fill section, common excavation shall <br />consist of excavation below topsoil stripping. <br />3. Subgrade Excavation: Excavation below the grading grade. <br />4. Rock Excavation: Includes rocks exceeding 1 cubic yard that are not decomposed, <br />weathered, or shattered, and which require blasting, barring, wedging, or use of air <br />tools for removal. Also included are any boulders, concrete, or masonry structure <br />(except concrete pavement, curb, gutter, and sidewalk). <br />5. Muck Excavation: Swamp deposits, peat and organic clay (PT or OH per the Unified <br />Soil Classification System). <br />6. Common Borrow: Inorganic soil which is capable of attaining specified compaction <br />levels, excluding soils which contain organics, contain debris, or are potentially <br />expansive (CH or MH per the Unified Soil Classification System). <br />EXCAVATION AND FILL <br />© 2015 Stantec 1 19380XXXX 31 23 00 - 1 <br />
