The Department of Natural Resources survey
finding that 35 to 44 year olds spent more hours on outdoor recreation than any other adult
age group highlights the potential for a stronger demand for outdoor recreation in Lake
Elmo than in other Twin Cities communities.
Lake Elmo has fewer young adults and seniors compared to the Twin Cities overall. The
2000 Lake Elmo population age groups of 20 to 24 year olds (4.7% of total population) and
25 to 34 year olds (9.4%) are less prevalent than in the Twin Cities, where these age
groups respectively made up 6.5% and 15.5% of the population. Lake Elmo's population
age 75 and up is noticeably less than this age group's presence in the Twin Cities. These
trends are visible in the 2000 population pyramids for Lake Elmo and for the Twin Cities.
Figure No. _
Lake Elmo and Twin Cities Population Pyramids
2000 Population for all races:
Lake Elmo city (Washington County)
Male ■ Fenale
Source: Minnesota Demographic Center
85+
66-84
75-79
76-74
65-69
68-64
55-59
58-54
45-49
46-44
35-39
3e-34
25-29
28-24
15-19
18-14
5-9
8-4
2000 Population:
Minneapolis -St. Paul.
