Public Works Director Updated: October 2025 <br />• Oversite of the SCADA system to ensure accurate monitoring and operation of essential <br />infrastructures. <br />• Keep current on new developments in legislation, engineering, public works and government <br />regulations which affect operations. Reviews and evaluates innovative concepts and <br />approaches, new equipment, and assistance programs. <br /> <br />Leadership/Supervision <br />• Ensure all department staff have the training and resources needed to effectively and safely <br />perform the duties of their positions. <br />• Establish a team environment that encourages open communication and empowers staff to <br />take ownership in the position and organization in a manner that supports the vision and <br />direction of the City and enhances employee satisfaction. <br />• Ensure Public Works divisions response to emergencies promptly, effectively and efficiently. <br />• Monitor operations to ensure compliance and relevant performance measures and guidelines. <br />• Provide counsel and information to the City Administrator, City Council and other officials on <br />issues as they relate to public works and the objective of developing solutions which will meet <br />the needs of the City most effectively. Participate with City Management officials in determining <br />and implementing overall policy and goal direction for the City Council where such policies <br />impact public works. <br />• Recommend organization structure, staffing, personnel actions and functions to maximize the <br />most effective use of resources and selects strategies for evaluating, monitoring, and reporting. <br />• Effectively supervise personnel, ensuring the effective operation of the department in <br />compliance with administrative policies and procedures. Maintains proper accountability and <br />communications among staff levels. <br />• Evaluate ongoing personnel job assignments, programs, procedures and operations to identify <br />potential improvements to operational performance goals and objectives. <br />• Provide leadership/coaching to Public Works Assistant Director and Leads including on-going <br />review and feedback concerning department goals, projects and priorities. <br />• Provide leadership role in departmental employee issues involving adherence to policies, <br />procedures, and discipline. Effectively respond to union grievances and bargaining unit <br />requests. Confer with Administrative Services Coordinator on contract interpretations, City <br />policy and other federal and state laws affecting City personnel. <br />• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the City Administrator and other <br />City Department Heads to ensure open communication and consistent initiatives to fulfill City <br />mission and vision. <br />Other Duties <br />• Effectively direct the work of a wide range of consultants involved in various public and private <br />development activities to ensure that the City’s objectives are achieved. <br />• Oversees and participate in the creation of complete and accurate documentation and <br />maintains all department files and records. <br />• Responsible for the department’s and City’s safety programs including implementing safety <br />trainings and compliance with the City’s safety programs and procedures. <br />• Ensure Department’s compliance with all State and Federal statutes and regulations related to <br />Public Works. <br />• Place a high priority on effective community relations and communications including inquiries <br />from citizens and users and participating in assigned community events.
