Workshops provide a setting to help stream-line the decision-making process by allowing discussion to
resolve issues and provides more transparency allowing for in depth discussions to take place before formal
action is taken at a Regular meeting.
RECOMMENDATION:
I have attached examples of other cities procedures for adding agenda items. Some allow items to be
added to the regular agenda and some add them to workshop agendas. Regardless of which agenda items
are added to, the expectations of staff are the same. Staff are expected to provide research/data, analysis
of problem/issues and think critically. If items are added to agendas and staff are not given time to deliver
what is expected of them from council then it slows down the process by not having complete information
and the need to have follow-up discussions.
My recommendation would be to have items that are added by the consensus of the council, placed at a
future workshop, also taking into consideration the workload of staff.
ATTACHMENTS:
ï‚·Current City Code regarding Order of Business at Regular Meetings
ï‚·Examples of other cities agenda setting procedures
