ANDERSON
AND ASSOCIATES, INOORPORATED
2500 AMERICAN NATIONAL BANK BUILDING
SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA 55101
812N292-0 00
FAX 812M2.0083
Patrick Flanagan has applied for a permit to replace his existing septic system. The present
system consists of two drywells and it will be replaced with a standard drainfield trench system.
This lot is on the west side of Olson Lake and shoreland regulations apply.
Soil borings and percolation tests have been performed and indicate the following design
parameters:
Number of Bedrooms
Design Sewage Flow
Septic Tank
Treatment Area
Trenches
4
750 gpd
1200 gat.
762 SF W/18" rock
3@3'x85'
Shoreland regulations require a 75' setback from the high water elevation to the drainfield. The
site evaluator feels that the system could be installed to meet this setback but it would be quite
close to the structure. He feels it would be better to request a 10' variance to allow placement of
the septic system at 65' from the high water elevation and have some flexibility in the
construction. The Building Official has viewed the site and concurs in the variance request.
Conclusion:
Based on the Building Official's observation, it is recommended that a setback variance be
granted to allow 65' from the septic system to the high water elevation where 75' is required.
The hardship is the existing location of the house and its proximity to the lakeshore. The well is
located on the road side of the house.
Sincerely,
Larry D. Bohrer, P.E.
LDB/niha
