Mayors Report August 2, 1994
On July 25, I watched the signing of the St. Croix River Touring Alliance
Articles of Incorporation by Governor Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin and
Governor Arnie Carlson. This took place aboard the Andiamo River Boat
somehere upstream of the Stillwater lift bridge. The alliance is an attempt to
coordinate the tourism publicity activities of eleven Minnesotan and eight
Wisconsin communities from Taylors Falls to River Falls. In this way, funding
will be spent more efficiently, and the attractiveness of the St. Croix Valley
will be publicized over a worldwide range of potential tourists. Tourism
already generates about $35 million in annual revenues for the area.
Forming the alliance is expected to ensure that this revenue will increase.
On the evening ofWednesday July 27, the City Administrator and I attended
a meeting with the Lake Elmo Volunteer Firemen, and discussed a number of
issues, from equipment disposal to budgets and coverage agreements
between Lake Elmo and adjacent communities. At this stage I would like to
recognise the resignation of Bill Eder from the Department after more than
30 years voluntary service. Thirty years of service as an employee is a long
time, but it is even more worthy of note as a volunteer. The City owes him a
lot, and I wish to specifically recognise his efforts in voluntarily providing
Fire Protection and Rescue Services to the citizens of Lake Elmo. Thank you,
Bill.
Another subject related to the Flush Water Hydrants which are located at
various points in the City. These are NOT Fire Hydrants, although they may
look the same. They are only used to flush out the domestic water systems at
times of maintenance. They do not have the water supply capacity for fire
fighting use, and should not be indicated as such in Home Insurance
application forms. The City Administrator is issuing a notice to this effect,
this will give it additional publicity.
Finally, tomorrow night, August .3, at 7.00 p.m. in the cafetaria of the Fortis
Insurance Building, I shall attend a planning discussion on the I-94 corridor.
This is at the invitation of Senators Gary Laidig and Len Price,
Representatives Pam Neary and Walt Perlt. Other municipalities have also
been invited, so as to develop a coordinated vision of the corridor. I shall
report on this meeting at the August J
/I
