- 5-
we plan a building sparingly in order to conserve open space of thie park
site. A building structure tends to contradict the natural environntal
theme and therefore a bu3lding plan with natural atmosphere and design is
recommended.
A woaden walkway will lead from the building to each of the two skating
ponds during [he winter. These wooden walkways can be easily removed
during non-winter mon[hs.
The building will be equipped with restrooms, one for men, one for women.
These restrooms will te desit{ned to accoodate persons confined to wheel-
chairs. Drinking fountains will be buil[ into the building walls, one on
the inside and another on the outside of the building. These fountains
will provide both a high spout for adults and a low spout for children
and persons in wheelchairs. A telephone will also be provided inside the
building. Again it will be placed in the reach of wheelchair persons
about 18" high.
Picnic Site
The band of trees provides an excellent area for a picnic site. Most
persons prefer to picnic in a tree setting for beauty, shade, and wilderness
atmosphere. Picnic benches should be strategically dispersed in.the wooded
area. Care should be taken not to place tables too close to other tables.
At least one picnic table which is designed for persons in wheelchairs
t li;. •W 3e* ±h? tables without hitting table leg-obstacles. These special
tables extend outward therefore allowing access±uiiity foa Lh hand+_capned.
Open Space
Open sQace is another great resource of Ardan Park. Rather than specify
land use for the park, open space is proposed. Open space follows the
theme of leisure atmosphere, passive observation, creative pursuits and
individual interests. Many parks are designed with specific uses such as
baseball fields, basketball courts, and hockey rinks. However, an open
apace area allows freedom for activities such as frisbee, catch, flying
kitea, dancing, and other such spontaneous activities which one may wish
to pursue. Open space encourages persons of creative and different interests
to enjoy park areas. Open space also provides breathing room. Parks which
are entirely designed for special uses tend to cater to special interest
persons. Nowever, open space in Ardan Park would provide an area for any
and all persons in the community to pursue recreational activities of
various types. -
