Therefore an interpark pathway will
be proposed.
Walking or so-called strolling paths within the park accented with occasional
bench resting spots follow the beauty leisure atmosphere and emphasis of
Ardan Park. Such walking paths will be made of limestone which will absorb
water, discourage erosion and wear, avoid muddy results, and follow the
environmental design of the park design and is an easy surface for wheel-
chairs to function. All paths within the park have less than a 5% grade
providing easy wheelchair use. This pa[h will follow the ponds and lead
to accented points within the park. The biY pa[hs will also be made with
a hard aubstance such as asphalt or cement oc some similar material. Easy
biking requires such a substance. Also, the bike paths will not enter the
interior pf the park but will follow the outer borders of the park area.
This will prevent bicycle traffic within the park and also will prevent
possible hazards to walkers and other park users. Also strolling patha
follow the leisure, passive, melancholy atmosphere proposed for Ardan Park.
There is a definite potential for a cross country ski trail betveen Ardan
Park and Greenfield Park. Land located at the S.E. aide of Ardan Park is
undeveloped land which connects to Greenfield Park. This land ia zoned for
single dwelling housing. Avaflability of this land by the Mounds View Park
and Recreation Coission would greatly increase the two park acreage. Also,
this land would provide an excellen[ resource for cross country ski trails,
bike trails and into the possibility of acquisition of this land.
roe •srry skt trails provide opportunities for Mounds View residents to
have a place for the cross country ski activity pursuits. Cross councry
trails will encourage this sport activity which has great advantages:
1. cross country skiing is a lifetime activity
2. crosa country skiing can be a family endeavor
3. croascomtry skiing encourages a nature emphasis
4. croas country ekiing promotes outdoor activity .
5. cross country skiing promotes healthy bodies and minds
For these reasons cross comtry skiing i's an activity which could he
encouraged provided that adequate apace such as the Ardan Park - Greenfield
Park trailway is available.
Building '
A building is proposed for Ardan Park. This building will be located between
the two ponds although receded from the slopes. This building will be 600
squate feet, 20 x 30 sq. ft. dimensions. Purposes of the building are:
1. to house maintenance equipment and materials, 2. to provide reetroome and
drinking fountain, 3. to provide a warming house for winter ice ekaters.
A maintenance road will lead from undeveloped Ardan Avenue to the building.
This road will service maintenance trucks, equipment and vehiclea.
i
The dimension of the building is large•enough for ita propoaed uaee. Ardan
Park, because of ita small aize ehould not contain too large a building.
Buildinga consume aignificant and valuable land area and for thie reaeon
