MEI TO: MoundsA7A,1/@arks and Recrea[ion Coi.saion
FROM: Srucel0"" '
DATE: May 5, 1978
RE: Garden lioodie +a:== Mgrketl
In our effort to provide services [o our residents not only for their
physical impmvement but mental as well, we propose to offer them an
opportunity, vithin their own counity, to exchange gardening information
to diacvsa garden problems, to he exposed to different heal[h-giving prnduee,
as well as provide an opportunity for the asle and/or purchase of garden
pmduce for table use and/or for home canning.
The concept of providing a regular gathering of people for theae purpoaea
is not new. With the increasing desire on the part of consumers for
garden-fresh, wholesome produce the suburban areas have recently started
providing for such oppor[unities by opening their own farmer's market. Laet
year Ramsey County opened one in Maplewooda the success of which was more
then they had hoped for.
Therefore, we request that the Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestrq
be iasued a license to eperate a non-profit Farmer's market to becalled
Garden Goodies.- The administration and the supervision of themarket vill
be under the Departnt of Parks, Recreation 6 Forea[ry.
It is proposed tha[ it be held once a week on a week day from 2:30 - 6:00 p.m.
The exact starting date will be determined on the basis of available produce.
Mr. Tony Jambor; manager of the Bel Rae Ballroom has offered the use of hia
parking lot, a[ least on a trial basis. Lawratory facilities will be provided
either atCity Hall or a Satellite will be moved onto the site on market day.
There will be no fees [o [he sellers or purchasers.
The iortance of Garden Goodies to [he counity is difficult to put into
vorda because it can mean different things to different people. Some of the
potential outgrow[hs might be:
1. To children it could be the firs[ time they have seen corn with the
huske on.
2. The first time children see beets as they are grown, not as they -
comE out of a can. . -
3. For an adult, the educational experience migh[ be the same.
4. Or it may --. he first time they have hew able to select which apples
to purohase :.ther than taking what has been prepackaged for them.
5. Provide the first experience of preserving their own food for vintet.
6. It might pzovide supplementary income for those on a fixed income,
or for low income families.
7. IC could save everybody money on their food bill.
8. It could be the firat time tAey have been told how to properly
prepare cauliflower.
