City of Mounds View Staff Report
March 1, 2001
Page 2
• INTANGIBLE
• Partnership with 8 other cities in the North Metro area
• Public relations with local and statewide media
• Affiliation with dozens of industry associations and other Bureaus to promote the Twin
Cities
Like most Convention and Visitor Bureaus, the CVB is funded by a 3% local lodging tax.
The 3% local lodging tax is levied on hotels/motels by a municipality on gross room
receipts. State Statute requires that 95% of the funds be utilized "to fund a local
convention or tourism bureau for the purpose of marketing and promoting the city or town
as a tourist or convention center." Five percent of the funds are retained by the
municipality for administrative purposes. Additionally, $2,000 is made available on an
annual basis to a local community festival, and to the local chamber of commerce.
Last week, Jon Connelly, Dan Hall, and Al Hamel (Days Inn), and I had the opportunity to
discuss potential membership in the organization. Subsequently, both Dan Hall and Al
Hamel indicated a desire for the City to solidify their relationship with the MMCVB.
Necessary Actions
0 Make a Recommendation to the EDA Regarding Membership in the Minneapolis Metro
North Convention and Visitors Bureau.
t.sort._#4.--zez.444204t.
Aaron Parrish, Economic Development Coordinator
(763) 717-4029
• NADATA\GROUPSTCONDEVTDC\Staff Reports\Staff°1\03-6A.doc
