• Respond to emergency service calls for disabled vehicles. Make repairs in field when possible. • Keep maintenance facility and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition. • Attend and participate in internal and external safety and certification training. • Perform other duties and responsibilities as apparent or assigned by the Public Works Supervisor. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: • High School Diploma or GED. • Satisfactory completion of a post secondary program of courses in automotive or truck mechanic training at an accredited institution is desirable (one-year credit given towards experience). • Two years of hands-on experience maintaining, servicing, and/or repairing various vehicles and equipment. Three years or more experience is desirable. Licenses and Certificates: • Possession of a valid Minnesota Class A commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement; obtain tanker endorsement within 6 months of employment. • Possession of a DOT Commercial Vehicle Inspector certificate issued by Minnesota Department of Public Safety or obtain within 12 months of employment. • Possession of a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificate in test series related to automotive and truck maintenance and repair or obtain within 12 months of employment. Auto Maintenance and Light Repair and/or Automotive and Light Truck certificates preferred. • Possession of a Water Supply System Operator Class D certificate issued by Minnesota Department of Health or obtain within 18 months of employment. • Possession of a Wastewater Operator Class S-D certificate issued by Minnesota Pollution Control Agency or obtain within 18 months of employment. NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: • General principles and practices of automobile and truck mechanics for engines, brakes, front- ends, suspensions, transmissions, electrical, cooling and heating systems, body exterior, hydraulics, and other components. • Methods, techniques, and procedures for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing vehicles and equipment, including purpose and proper use of equipment, tools, and materials. • Parts and supplies used in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair. • Proper safety precautions related to all work performed, including safe handling and application of chemicals used in work and stored on site. Skill in: • Performing preventative maintenance to automobiles, trucks, heavy-duty maintenance and construction equipment, mowers, generators, small engines, and other equipment. • Operating hand and power tools, pneumatic devices, hydraulic lifts, and other common and specialty tools and equipment used for essential duties and responsibilities. • Diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical and electrical problems to a variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery. Operate mechanical and electrical test equipment. • Basic use of computers and software programs; experience with Microsoft Office preferred. Ability to: • Assist with establishing and maintaining effective preventive maintenance programs, procedures and policies. • Read maintenance and repair manuals and perform procedures contained within. • Work on-call and participate in rotating standby duty schedule. • Work independently or on a team and complete daily work tasks and multi-day project assignments while meeting a work schedule. • Learn how to perform general, skilled, and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of construction, maintenance, repair, and inspection activities; learn how to operate tools and equipment of other O&M subdivisions.
