Sanitary Sewer
There was 177,390 feet, or 33.6 miles, of sanitary sewer cleaned in
2012. In addition, there was approximately 10 miles of sanitary
sewer trunk televised and inspected including trunk mains in Area
E and F of the street program. Many of the vulnerable sewers in
Area E were replaced or lined in 2012 with the street project.
Public Works did not have any emergency sewer trunk repairs
during 2012 but did respond on a few occasions a troublesome
manhole in Area E that was found to have dropped a few inches in
elevation and not allowing sewage to flow positively down
gradient. The manhole was replaced and no further problems
have been reported.
City -owned rain garden on Groveland Road
Stormwater
Maintenance for over 250 infiltration basins constructed with the
street projects has increased the workload for the stormwater
O&M. The challenge for long-term performance of these basins
involves keeping sediment out of the basin bottoms where the
infiltration occurs. Over time, fine sand and silt carried by storm
runoff will build up in the basin bottoms causing infiltration rates to
drop. The grass strip at the curb cut is meant to intercept the
sediment before reaching the basin infiltration area, and requires
removal by maintenance personnel. Sediment inlets to Silverview
Pond were dug out during fall 2012. Pond maintenance and
inspection procedures have increased and will continue in 2013.
Streets and Trails
The fourth snowiest winter of all time for the region was following
by one of the least snowiest during 2011/2012. There were 20
total snow events requiring 211 tons of salt and 2,602 plow truck
miles driven. This effort was split nearly 50/50 between the first
part of 2012 and the last part of 2012. Maintenance crews also
used 321 tons of asphalt to fill potholes, skim coat, patch, or repair
various pavements. The crew also sealed cracks in the pavement
during fall 2012 and painted crosswalks and pavement markings
during summer. Public Works contracted with Ramsey County to
paint 57,195 feet of lines to municipal streets.
Parks and Facilities
A wet and warm spring followed by drought conditions during
summer and fall made 2012 a challenging year to keep the
parklands and building grounds looking good and well groomed.
Countless hours were spent mowing early on, then followed by
watering trees and weeding. The maintenance crew was also busy
dragging ball fields, weed whipping, maintaining landscaping, and
keeping equipment in good working order. Public Works crews
also performed the infield grading for the reconstructed baseball
field at Lambert Park and assisted with the baseball field fencing,
playground replacement, new irrigation system, and grading.
2012 ANNUAL REPORT I DEPT.
