Fire Marshal Update (continued)
Going above and beyond:
Fire Marshal Jeremiah Anderson worked closely with the owners of two buildings/businesses
regarding fire code compliance in the second half of 2012. The first of these was regarding the
vacant building at 2832 Highway 10 which was purchased in July 2012 by a business owner
wishing to operate an automotive repair and tire sales/installation business. The City granted a
Conditional Use Permit (CUP) to the business owner, contingent upon successful completion of
a fire inspection, to operate the "Tires and More" business at this location. Fire Marshal
Anderson completed an initial fire inspection in September and identified the high piled storage
of 300 tires inside an unsprinklered building as a hazard in need of correction. Numerous
communications and site visits occurred over the period of September to December 2012, all of
which culminated in the building having a fully operational sprinkler system installed in
December 2012.
The second case was regarding the vacant building at 2400 County Rd H2. This location had
been the site of a former nightclub establishment that had remained vacant for more than one
year. The owner of the former nightclub business had worked out an agreement with the building
owner to use the building for night club events of an assembly occupancy type occurring on
weekends.
Jeremiah Anderson effectively and professionally assisted these two properties into becoming
code compliant through the months of September until the end of the year. Both were very high
hazards --the first a retail store selling tires which is amongst the worst fire hazards (second only
to fireworks) you can find, and the second an assembly which serves alcohol. The assembly
property was challenging as the property manager wanted to hold an event despite being in
violation of the Fire Code. To provide an adequate bridge allowing his contractors to complete
the work the fire department provided a "fire watch" at his event.
Tires and More was given 90 days to complete the sprinkler upgrade and appeared to
underestimate the consequences of failing to meet the stated deadline. A constant flow of
communication by Marshal Anderson helped them to realize the severity of the problem and the
need for resolution which they eventually complied as the facility is now fully sprinklered,
tested, and operational. Many Fire Marshals could go an entire career without having to deal
with something of this depth and magnitude. The various elements and personalities associated
with both the Tires and More and Robert's locations were definitely challenging to say the least.
Home & Garden Show
The North Metro Home and Garden Show continues to be a successful venture to bring
homeowners and contractors together to talk about home improvement in a neutral and friendly
environment. The comments overheard from residents and contractors were all positive. The
Show was held in new space this year which seemed to be a huge improvement over previous
years, in that all vendors, cities, exhibitors and seminars were all on one level. This helped to
give the show a better flow and sense of cohesion, although a few people thought that the show
looked smaller even though there were actually more booths. The show didn't completely sell out
the new larger space, which simply leaves the opportunity for the event to grow in the future (the
event has continually grown since its inception 15 years ago).
Page 13
