Community Development Activity
As has been discussed previously, 2012 was a challenging year for
the Community Development Department due to the resignation
of longtime Building Official and Fire Marshal Kathi Osmonson.
(Kathi left to take a position in the State Fire Marshal's Office.)
While Housing & Code Enforcement Inspector Jeremiah
Anderson was able to assume the fire marshal duties and
responsibilities, we had to bring back temporary inspector Don
Burda for building inspections and leaned on the City of New
Brighton's Building Official for plan review activities and for
other issues above the skill and expertise of Mr. Burda.
Fortunately, the numbers of permits were nowhere near pre 2008
levels, but overall permit volume had increased from the previous
year which kept Barb, Don, Jeremiah and Heidi quite busy. In
August, Steve Thorp was hued to be the building official and
quickly learned the ropes.
Fire Marshal Update
2012 was a year of transition for the fire prevention inspection program in the City of Mounds
View. Jeremiah Anderson successfully completed the remainder of the fire inspections in City
licensed facilities and responded to several other emerging fire code enforcement cases near the
end of 2012.
False Alarm Prevention:
Follow up on residential false alarms continued in 2012 with the prevention initiative. The City
of Mounds View published articles in the city newsletter and utilized the City Facebook page,
website and cable television to educate residents on false alarm prevention. When a false alarm
was responded to, the business owner or homeowner was contacted by means of a friendly
informative letter that explained the need to have their alarm system serviced or take corrective
actions to eliminate the activity that lead to the false alarm.
Business as Usual:
Fire prevention inspections were completed April through June at all businesses serving alcohol
as part of their liquor license renewal that occurred in July 2012. Fire prevention inspections
were also completed at all Churches and other places of assembly during 2012. Lastly, all high
hazard business occupancies were inspected during 2012.
Page 12
2011
2012
Permit and Plan Check Revenues
$98,569
$102,875
Value of Permitted Work
$4,151,517
$5,925,324
Total Permits
719
805
Building and Zoning Inspections
1,267
1,398
Nuisance and Zoning Code Violations
621
442
Section 8 Inspections
110
86
Rental Dwelling License Inspections
278
59
Fire Marshal Update
2012 was a year of transition for the fire prevention inspection program in the City of Mounds
View.
