School Resource Officer (SRO) The SRO performs various duties on a daily basis at Edgewood Middle School which include the following: • assisting with traffic flow in front of the school • ensuring the school is secured each morning Y providing a police presence in the hallways during passing times and in the cafeteria during lunch times • investigating crimes that occur on school property • assisting with lock down, fire, and severe weather drills • serving as a member of the school crisis team • providing police support to school dances and after school activities • assisting at Pinewood Elementary as needed • being a liaison between the school and the police department Y forming positive relationships with students In September, the SRO made the following incident reports: • 1 follow up for an OFP violation • 1 medical • 1 harassment • 1 follow up for a theft of bicycle • 1 info to narcotics No juveniles were arrested or sent to diversion by the SRO. One student was sent to the hospital for an evaluation. Some additional services the SRO provided at the school this quarter included: • Maintaining the school radio communications system • Deescalating out of control students • Contacting juvenile probation officers • Operation of the school surveillance system • Locating truant students • Locating and recovering stolen bikes, electronics, and other property Highlights from 3rd Quarter The SRO spent the first day of school welcoming new students and the incoming 6th graders to Edgewood Middle School. He helped students with learning their locker combinations and finding their way around the school. SRO's from the Mounds View School District met with officials from the school district to discuss the new school year. This year the district will be hiring police officers for after school events in order to provide additional security. The district is relaxing its electronic devices policy for students and is encouraging students to bring devices to 5
