School Resource Officer (SRO) <br />The department has an officer assigned to Edgewood Middle School for the entire school <br />year. This position is held by Officer Ben Knitter who provides a wide range of duties from <br />security, enforcement, counseling and general assistance to the staff and student body. All of <br />this works toward the goal of maintaining successful and safe school operations. During the <br />summer months this position returns to patrol duties. <br />The SRO performs various duties on a daily basis at Edgewood Middle School which include <br />the following: <br />• Assisting with traffic flow in front of the school <br />• Ensuring the school is secured each morning <br />• Providing a police presence in the hallways during passing times and in the cafeteria <br />during lunch times <br />• Investigating crimes that occur on school property <br />• Assisting with lock down and fire drills <br />• Attending school dances and after school activities <br />• Being available to assist Pinewood Elementary <br />• Being a liaison between the school and the police department <br />• Forming positive relationships with students <br />• Transporting students to the in -school suspension program at the Snail Lake <br />Education Center <br />• Being available to assist school staff with a wide range of student issues that may <br />arise <br />From October through December, the SRO made the following incident reports: <br />• 4 thefts <br />• 5 disturbances <br />• 1 assault <br />• 1 assist to ambulance <br />• 1 terroristic threats. <br />The SRO referred 2 juveniles to the Northwest Youth and Family Services Diversion Program <br />and 2 juveniles were petitioned to the courts. <br />The SRO also assisted in the following ways: <br />• Counseled students regarding problems at home <br />• Received tips from students regarding crimes in the community <br />• Deescalated out of control students and assisted teachers with very disruptive <br />students <br />• Counseled students about bullying <br />• Used the school security cameras to help the deans locate instances of theft and <br />bullying <br />• Arranged for Officer Erickson and K-9 Niko to do a demonstration for the "Careers with <br />Animals" class at the school <br />• Met with and counseled students who had high numbers of absences and tardies <br />5 <br />
