Item No: 7D <br />Meeting Date February 8, 2016 <br />Type of Business: CB <br />Administrator Review: ____ <br />City of Mounds View Staff Report <br />To: Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From: Desaree Crane, Assistant City Administrator <br />Item Title/Subject: Resolution 8517, Approving the Hire of Scott <br />VanderVegt to the position of Public Works Mechanic <br /> <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br />Public Works (PW) Mechanic Steve Vacek retired from his position effective November 30, 2015. On <br />November 9, 2015, the City Council approved Resolution 8476, approving a revised job description, <br />and authorized Staff to advertise for the position of Mechanic. The City received fourteen (14) <br />applications. <br /> <br /> <br />Discussion: <br /> <br />Staff advertised the opening on the City’s website, Star Tribune, government jobs.com, and the <br />League of Minnesota Cities website. Staff interviewed nine (9) qualified candidates. It was the <br />consensus of Staff to recommend Scott VanderVegt to the position of PW Mechanic. <br /> <br />Mr. VanderVegt has a certificate in Medium/Heavy Truck Technician at St. Cloud Technical College, <br />and is a Certified DOT Inspector and ASE Certified in automotive medium heavy truck. He is currently <br />working as a Mechanic with the City of St. Louis Park. <br /> <br />In accordance with the Public Works Collective Bargaining Agreement, Mr. VanderVegt will start at <br />Level A ($24.72/hour). All City benefits and personnel policies will apply as stated in the Mounds View <br />Personnel Manual and the PW Collective Bargaining Agreement. <br /> <br />References checks are currently being completed. This appointment will be contingent on satisfactory <br />reference checks. In addition, this appointment would be contingent on satisfactory criminal <br />background checks, satisfactory drug test, and satisfactory pre-employment exam. <br /> <br />Mr. VanderVegt would begin employment on or about February 29, 2016. <br /> <br />This is a full-time, non-exempt, union position. <br /> <br /> <br />Recommendation: <br /> <br />Staff recommends the City Council adopt Resolution 8517, hiring Scott VanderVegt to the position of <br />PW Mechanic contingent on satisfactory reference checks, satisfactory criminal background checks, <br />satisfactory drug test, and satisfactory pre-employment exam. <br /> <br />Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br /> <br />________________________ <br />Desaree Crane
