9

Canine (K-9) Unit
In 2015, Nick and Niko conducted meet and greet
demonstrations for events in the city including the
annual Town Hall Meeting, Festival in the Park,
National Night Out, and the Firearms safety course that
our officer’s teach through the Minnesota Department
of Natural Resources.

Our K-9 team showed off their skills for the kids at
Edgewood Middle School. The students are taking a
class in “Careers with Animals”. Niko showed off his
skills in obedience, article searches, apprehensions,
and narcotics searches. This was well received by the
kids and staff.

Niko also performed a demo for a Girl Scout Troop.
The impact of the demo led them to pursue the task of
raising money for a K-9 vest. Niko already had a K9
Vest but the Blaine Police Department was setting up a
new K-9 and would need a vest. The troop raised the
money for the vest and hosted a ceremony at Blaine City Hall where Nick and Niko were
requested to attend and awarded a plaque.
In March, Nick and Niko competed in narcotic’s trials. They were competing with many other
K-9 teams in the area. Niko successfully completed trials and recertified for narcotics
detection.

Nick and Niko also participated in their third United States Police Canine Association
(USPCA) Region 18 K-9 trials. Our K-9 team did a great job, and they obtained high marks
from the judges. This is an annual event that gathers K-9 units from around the region to test
their skills in several different areas of field work. This includes apprehension, article
searches, agility and obedience. We are very proud of their accomplishments!

In August, Nick and Niko participated in the National Night Out Event and attended several
block parties to introduce them to Niko.

Additionally in August, our K-9 team performed at the Mounds View annual Festival in the
Park event. This event was well attended and enjoyed by a good crowd of observers.
Over the 2015 year, the K-9 unit was deployed 59 times and conducted 18 meet and greets
and demonstrations.

Officer Erickson and Niko are proud to serve the citizens of Mounds View and they are an
integral part of the Mounds View Police Department. The K-9 team conducts daily trainings
that include other Mounds View Officers so all are accustomed to working together. If you
would like more information about the K-9 team or would like to make a donation to help
cover the cost of training and care, please contact the police department at 763-717-4070.
