Item No: 07H
Meeting Date: April 25, 2016
Type of Business: CB
City Administrator Review: _____
City of Mounds View Staff Report
To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: Brian Erickson, P.E., Director of Public Works/City
Engineer
Brandon Stenglein, Project Coordinator
Item Title/Subject: Resolution 8557, Approving an Engineering Services
Agreement with Braun Intertec for Construction Materials
Testing and Special Inspection Services Related to Street
& Utility Improvement Program - Area I

Introduction:
The City Council is asked to approve an engineering services agreement with Braun Intertec for
construction materials testing and special inspection services related to SUIP Area I

Discussion:
The construction contract for Area I (Project # 2016-C01) was awarded at the March 28, 2016
Council meeting. However, one additional and necessary element to insure the success of this
project is the material testing services required during construction. As a result fee proposals
were solicited from two firms for these services. Braun Intertec’s proposal was the lowest priced
at $41,553 for the soil, concrete and bituminous testing. These services are customary for street
and utility construction. Public Works recommends adding a 10% or $4,150 contingency to the
total fee proposal in the event additional quality assurance testing is required. It should be noted
that this proposal is based on estimated hours and reimbursable expenses, and as a result the
final cost could be higher or lower than this estimate.

Recommendation:
Staff recommends the City Council adopt the attached resolution authorizing the approval of an
engineering services agreement with Braun Intertec for construction materials testing and special
inspection services for the Street & Utility Improvement Program – Area I project (2016-C01).

Respectfully submitted,

_______________________
Brian L. Erickson, P.E.
Director of Public Works/City Engineer
