Item No: 07E
Meeting Date: July 13, 2015
Type of Business: CB
City Administrator Review: _____
City of Mounds View Staff Report
To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: Brian Erickson, P.E., Director of Public Works/City
Engineer
Item Title/Subject: Resolution 8436, Approving the Installation of Panic
Hardware and Door Release Buttons in City Hall

Introduction:
The City Council is asked to approve the installation of panic hardware and door release
buttons in various locations in City Hall.

Discussion:
Staff has been reviewing options for installation of panic hardware and door release buttons
in various City Hall locations. The panic hardware would allow for notification of law
enforcement should the need arise. This panic hardware would be installed in the
Community Development and Engineering areas of City Hall as well as in the Council
Chambers. Installation would be under the desk at workstations, business counters or the
Council dais as these areas are normally occupied. The concealed mount would unto allow
for discrete activation by a staff member.

The door release hardware would be installed for Community Development and Engineering.
Currently, these doors are unlocked and anyone can access the areas behind the counter if
they choose to do so by simply pushing the door open. The door releases would allow the
doors to remain locked and thus providing additional security. In the event a person at the
counter had an appointment or needed to discuss something further with a staff member, a
designated staff member could press a release button for the electronic lock and allow that
visitor to enter the area behind the counter.

Recommendation:
Staff recommends the City Council approve the installation of the panic hardware and door
release buttons in the amount of $5,809.23 from Pro-Tec Design of Minneapolis MN. After a
discussion with the Finance Director the recommended funding for this installation would
come from the following budget lines: 50% - 100-4460-5130, ($2,904.61), 25% - 700-4823-
5110, ($1,452.31) and 25% - 730-4823-5130, ($1,452.31).

Respectfully submitted,

_______________________
Brian Erickson
Director of Public Works/City Engineer
