Position Description | Mechanic Page 1/4 <br />CITY OF MOUNDS VIEW <br />POSITION DESCRIPTION <br /> <br />Position Title: Mechanic <br />Department: Public Works – Maintenance Division <br />Accountable to: Director of Public Works/City Engineer <br />FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Public Works Collective Bargaining Unit) <br /> <br />PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION <br />To perform skilled work in repairing and maintaining a variety of vehicles and mechanical equipment <br />which may include automobiles, trucks, heavy-duty maintenance and construction equipment, <br />mowers, trailers, small engines, power tools, generators, and other complex equipment and <br />machinery. <br /> <br />SUPERVISION RECEIVED <br />General supervision is provided by the Public Works Supervisor. <br /> <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED <br />None. <br /> <br />ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES <br /> Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules and repairs for all vehicles <br />and equipment assigned. <br /> Perform preventative and routine maintenance on a variety of vehicles and equipment including <br />draining and replacing fluids; lubricating chassis, hinges, and moving parts; replacing filters; <br />cleaning manifolds; balancing and rotating tires; tightening connections; and other maintenance <br />work. <br /> Inspect and test belts, hoses, wires, cables, spark plugs, lights, brake pads and rotors, tires, <br />shocks, bearings, bushings, batteries, wiper blades, and other parts as part of routine <br />maintenance. Replace and/or repair worn, broken, or malfunctioning parts as required. <br /> Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment problems involving engines, brakes, front-ends, <br />suspensions, transmissions, electrical, exhausts, axles, cooling and heating systems, exteriors, <br />hydraulic systems, and other mechanical components. <br /> Perform tune-ups on engines and adjust parts and settings to obtain optimum performance. <br /> Install and troubleshoot radios, antennas, light bars, and other electrical components. <br /> Participate in routine welding, fabricating, and assembly of various parts and equipment. <br /> Participate in routine maintenance and repairs to mowers, chainsaws, weed whips, leaf blowers, <br />building equipment, and other small engine equipment and machinery. <br /> Keep detailed records of service and repair work performed. Check and record mileage of <br />vehicles on monthly basis and schedule preventative maintenance. <br /> Assist in ordering and purchasing of equipment, parts and supplies used for vehicle and <br />equipment maintenance. Coordinate deliveries and with outside vendors for service or repair <br />work <br /> Clean and keep organized the mechanic work and storage areas. Maintain stock of parts and <br />materials including an ongoing inventory of the tool room and stock items. <br /> Assist and participate in responding to emergencies affecting municipal infrastructure function <br />including storm debris clean-up, water and sewer pipe breaks, traffic control, flooding, and other <br />urgent matters. <br /> Participate in the Public Works “Standby Duty” and “Call Back” programs for after-hours and <br />weekend maintenance, repairs, and emergencies. <br /> Assist and participate in essential duties of other maintenance subdivisions when assigned by <br />Public Works Supervisor. <br /> <br />OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
