Position Description | Mechanic Page 2/4 <br /> Respond to emergency service calls for disabled vehicles. Make repairs in field when possible. <br /> Keep maintenance facility and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition. <br /> Attend and participate in internal and external safety and certification training. <br /> Perform other duties and responsibilities as apparent or assigned by the Public Works Supervisor. <br /> <br />MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS <br />Education and Experience: <br /> High School Diploma or GED. <br /> Satisfactory completion of a post secondary program of courses in automotive or truck mechanic <br />training at an accredited institution is desirable (one-year credit given towards experience). <br /> Two years of hands-on experience maintaining, servicing, and/or repairing various vehicles and <br />equipment. Three years or more experience is desirable. <br />Licenses and Certificates: <br /> Possession of a valid Minnesota Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement; <br />obtain tanker endorsement within 6 months of employment. <br /> Possession of a DOT Commercial Vehicle Inspector certificate issued by Minnesota Department <br />of Public Safety or obtain within 12 months of employment. <br /> Possession of a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificate in test <br />series related to automotive and truck maintenance and repair or obtain within 12 months of <br />employment. Auto Maintenance and Light Repair and/or Automotive and Light Truck certificates <br />preferred. <br /> Possession of a W ater Supply System Operator Class D certificate issued by Minnesota <br />Department of Health or obtain within 18 months of employment. <br /> Possession of a Wastewater Operator Class S-D certificate issued by Minnesota Pollution Control <br />Agency or obtain within 18 months of employment. <br /> <br />NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES <br />Knowledge of: <br /> General principles and practices of automobile and truck mechanics for engines, brakes, front- <br />ends, suspensions, transmissions, electrical, cooling and heating systems, body exterior, <br />hydraulics, and other components. <br /> Methods, techniques, and procedures for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing vehicles and <br />equipment, including purpose and proper use of equipment, tools, and materials. <br /> Parts and supplies used in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair. <br /> Proper safety precautions related to all work performed, including safe handling and application of <br />chemicals used in work and stored on site. <br />Skill in: <br /> Performing preventative maintenance to automobiles, trucks, heavy-duty maintenance and <br />construction equipment, mowers, generators, small engines, and other equipment. <br /> Operating hand and power tools, pneumatic devices, hydraulic lifts, and other common and <br />specialty tools and equipment used for essential duties and responsibilities. <br /> Diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical and electrical problems to a variety of vehicles, <br />equipment, and machinery. Operate mechanical and electrical test equipment. <br /> Basic use of computers and software programs; experience with Microsoft Office preferred. <br />Ability to: <br /> Assist with establishing and maintaining effective preventive maintenance programs, procedures <br />and policies. <br /> Read maintenance and repair manuals and perform procedures contained within. <br /> Work on-call and participate in rotating standby duty schedule. <br /> Work independently or on a team and complete daily work tasks and multi-day project <br />assignments while meeting a work schedule. <br /> Learn how to perform general, skilled, and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of construction, <br />maintenance, repair, and inspection activities; learn how to operate tools and equipment of other <br />O&M subdivisions.
