6 <br /> <br />patrol duty and now also coordinates our crime free multi-housing duties. Officer Brian <br />Schultes will take over as the new SRO at Edgewood in September 2014. <br /> <br />Canine (K-9) Unit <br /> <br />From April 01st, to June 30th, 2014 the K-9 team responded to 279 calls for service, wrote 90 <br />reports and made 12 arrests. <br /> <br /> In April the K-9 team was deployed a total of four times: <br />• 3 for building alarms and searches <br />• 1 for a house and area search for a domestic assault suspect. <br />In May there were seven deployments in all: <br />• 2 possible burglaries <br />• 2 meet and greet events <br />• 1 area search <br />• 1 vehicle pursuit. <br />• Our K-9 team showed off their skills for the kids at Edgewood Middle School. The kids <br />are taking a class in “Careers with Animals”. Niko showed off his skills in obedience, <br />article searches, apprehensions, and narcotics searches. This was well received by <br />the kids and staff. <br />In June there were four deployments: <br />• 1 demonstration at the Pinewood Fun Run <br />• 1 warrant arrest <br />• 1 general assist <br />• In June Nick and Niko participated in their second United States Police Canine <br />Association (USPCA) region 18 K-9 trials. Our K-9 team did a great job, and they <br />obtained high marks from the judges. This is an annual event that gathers K-9 units <br />from around the region to test their skills in several different areas of field work. This <br />includes apprehension, article searches, agility and obedience.
