Mounds View City Council July 28, 2014
Regular Meeting Page 13

1
Gerald Kluthe, 7869 Greenwood Drive, provided comment on his pet, Bandit, noting he was a 2
high priced show dog that cost his family $1,500. He reported his daughter has a number of 3
championships for showing a previous dog. He discussed the incident in further detail with the 4
Council and questioned why the Police Officer chose to shoot his dog versus using mace. It was 5
his opinion that the Community Service Officer should have handled this matter and not the 6
responding Police Officer. He recommended the police department provide its officers with 7
proper animal control. 8
9
Mrs. Kluthe provided comment on the number of homes in America that owned pets and 10
encouraged the police department to properly train its officers to handle pets. 11
12
Mayor Flaherty thanked Mr. and Mrs. Kluthe for their comments and hoped that Bandit made a 13
full recovery. 14
15
Council Member Hull asked how the police officer involved in this incident was doing. Police 16
Chief Kinney explained the officer has recovered but did sustain a bite. He apologized to the 17
Kluthe family for the incident but explained the officer acted in a manner to protect himself. 18
19
Council Member Mueller was pleased that the officer had recovered. 20
21
MOTION/SECOND: Mueller/Gunn.
