Mounds View City Council May 13, 2013
Regular Meeting Page 11

K. Resolution 8104, Approving Playground Equipment Replacement and Site 1
Work at Silver View Park. 2
3
Public Works Director DeBar stated that the playground equipment at Silver View Park was 4
scheduled for replacement in 2013. He reviewed several options for the playground layout with 5
the Council. Staff also recommended the playground equipment be relocated within the park. 6
The new placement would allow for parents to better watch their children from the shelter and 7
softball fields. He commented the playground site would need to be leveled off slightly. 8
9
Public Works Director DeBar explained the vendor selected by Staff and the Parks Commission 10
for the playground equipment was Minnesota Wisconsin Playground out of Golden Valley, 11
Minnesota. He noted the proposed playground would include three units, one that would appeal 12
to toddlers, one for children ages 5-12 and a swing set. He explained the whirl unit and space 13
climber would remain in the park. He noted the new units would have to be ADA compliant. 14
15
Public Works Director DeBar indicated the total cost for the three new units was $81,475. It was 16
noted a three-foot wide concrete border would be added along with 12 inches of wood fiberfill. 17
The total cost for the units, site grading and groundwork would be $105,151.47 plus a 5% 18
contingency. He noted there would be an expense to refurbish the two existing pieces but should 19
not exceed $10,000. Staff recommended the Council approve the playground equipment 20
replacement at Silver View Park for a cost not to exceed $115,000. 21
22
Council Member Mueller asked if the proposed color scheme would be green and beige. Public 23
Works Director DeBar stated this was the case as the brown and green tended to fade less than 24
reds and yellows. 25
26
Mayor Flaherty questioned if the park had a flat spot big enough for the playground equipment. 27
Public Works Director DeBar indicated that the sloped area would be leveled off to provide a 28
safe location for the equipment. 29
30
Mayor Flaherty noted Park Dedication Funds would be used for this expense. 31
32
MOTION/SECOND: Gunn/Mueller.
