CITY OF MOUNDS VIEW <br />POSITION DESCRIPTION <br /> <br />Position Title: Building Official/Fire Marshal/Fire Fighter <br />Department: Community Development <br />Accountable to: Community Development Director <br />Status: Non-Exempt <br /> <br /> <br />PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF POSITION <br /> <br />Perform comprehensive building and fire inspections on residential, commercial and <br />industrial properties to ensure compliance with existing city and state codes and <br />policies governing new construction and existing structures. Conduct plan reviews. <br />Respond to emergency fire calls as needed. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />SUPERVISION RECEIVED <br />Works under the general guidance and direction of the Community Development <br />Director. Reports to the Fire Chief regarding emergency fire calls. <br /> <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED <br />Supervises Building and Fire Inspectors and Interns. <br /> <br /> <br />ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES <br /> <br />Building Official <br /> <br />• Provides guidance and assistance in all areas of building permit applications and <br />reviews all submitted plans to ensure compliance with established state and local <br />codes and ordinances. <br />• Approves and issues permits which are in compliance and provides assistance in <br />identifying changes required in specifications to meet established codes. <br />• Conducts or supervises on-site comprehensive inspections to ensure compliance <br />with existing codes including building, mechanical, plumbing, fire and housing. <br />• Ensures all related paperwork is completed and full documentation is available <br />for decisions related to the inspection process. <br />• Provides concise code interpretations for those circumstances in which there is a <br />difference of opinion of the specific intent of a specific code provision. <br />• Reviews contractor license applications for recommendation to the City Council. <br />• Investigates citizen complaints related to the building and fire code activities of <br />the City with the goal of resolving issues in the best interest of all concerned, <br />while providing the highest possible degree of life safety. <br /> <br />Plan Review <br />• Performs plan review for new structures, expansions and changes of use to <br />ensure that they conform to all building and fire safety codes and practices. <br />• Reviews building plans and expansion projects for compliance with state and <br />federal accessibility requirements.
