Mounds View City Council April 9, 2012 Regular Meeting Page 3 City Administrator Ericson stated that this item is reviewed on an annual basis. The Twin Cities 1 Gateway organization provides funding to market and draw in crowds for local festivals or 2 events. Last year the City received $3,673, which was used for Festival in the Park. This year 3 the City would like to split the allocation between Festival in the Park and the Back to the 50’s 4 Hot Rod event. 5 6 City Administrator Ericson indicated the Mounds View Community Theatre requested funding. 7 However, after review by staff, this was not suggested as the Theatre did not rise to the same 8 level as the other two events. The City was anticipating receiving $4,400 from Twin Cities 9 Gateway, and staff recommended providing $2,200 for Festival in the Park and to the Minnesota 10 Street Rod Back to the 50’s event at the Mermaid. 11 12 Council Member Mueller questioned if the City had additional funds to cover the additional law 13 enforcement expense for the Back to the 50’s event at The Mermaid. City Administrator Ericson 14 stated this would be an overtime expense taken from the general fund. 15 16 Council Member Mueller indicated the heaviest traffic through the City would be Wednesday 17 evening through Thursday. She was pleased that the traffic would be running through Mounds 18 View and felt it was a terrific opportunity to market the City. She supported staff’s 19 recommendation. 20 21 Mayor Flaherty requested further information on the Twin Cities Gateway fund requirements. 22 City Administrator Ericson reviewed the language and described how the funds could be used by 23 the City. 24 25 Mayor Flaherty stated security at The Mermaid would need to be addressed for the Back to the 26 50’s event. The proposed funds could assist with this expense. He recommended the City 27 contact The Mermaid regarding security to see if they were interested in hiring an overtime 28 officer. City Administrator Ericson stated the staffing needs would be addressed. 29 30 Mayor Flaherty commented he would like to see the Festival in the Park event remain top priority 31 for the City and questioned if the $2,200 would be enough to advertise the event. City 32 Administrator Ericson noted an additional $1,900 was available from last year’s allocation to 33 assist with advertising Festival in the Park. He agreed this Festival should be the main focus. 34 35 Council Member Gunn stated she would like to see promotion of Mounds View’s local 36 businesses through the event at The Mermaid. 37 38 Council Member Mueller agreed adding Festival in the Park information could also be included. 39 40 City Administrator Ericson explained Heidi Steinmetz was looking to create a coupon book or 41 guide to highlight the City’s amenities. He noted dollars may be available through the EDA to 42 assist with this expense. 43 44 Council Member Mueller indicated the Mounds View Business Council would be meeting this 45
