Mounds View City Council May 29, 2012 <br />Regular Meeting Page 8 <br /> <br />Council Member Gunn indicated National Night Out would be held on August 7th. She 1 <br />encouraged the residents to begin planning their events. 2 <br /> 3 <br /> B. Reports of Staff. 4 <br />1. Police Department Quarterly Report. 5 <br /> 6 <br />Police Chief Kinney discussed the Police Department’s first quarter report in detail with the 7 <br />Council. He reviewed several statistics regarding traffic enforcement. He explained calls and 8 <br />adult arrests were on the rise. It was noted that traffic enforcement was becoming a focus of the 9 <br />department. He was pleased to report all officers were doing a wonderful job enforcing traffic 10 <br />laws. 11 <br /> 12 <br />Police Chief Kinney commented 150 fifth grade students graduated from the DARE program 13 <br />again this year. He was proud that the Mounds View Police Department was able to offer this 14 <br />program to its students. 15 <br /> 16 <br />Mayor Flaherty believed in the value of the DARE program and the positive relationships that are 17 <br />built up between the local youth and the police department. 18 <br /> 19 <br />Police Chief Kinney thanked the students for completing the doghouse for Niko. He was pleased 20 <br />that the students could be involved in the Police Department’s new endeavor. He reported 21 <br />bullying was a major issue at the school this year and the department was continuing education 22 <br />on this matter. 23 <br /> 24 <br />Police Chief Kinney reviewed the Safe and Sober program stating the department would continue 25 <br />to hold saturation events to reduce drunk and impaired driving. Lastly, he commented on the 26 <br />department’s new K-9. The City was proud to have its own canine and congratulated Officer 27 <br />Ericson on his accomplishments with Niko. 28 <br /> 29 <br />Council Member Mueller requested further information on the number of vehicles parked within 30 <br />the Public Works fence. Police Chief Kinney explained these vehicles were seized and forfeited 31 <br />vehicles. Unfortunately, the process to resolve some of the matters was lengthy. 32 <br /> 33 <br />Council Member Mueller questioned if the Police Department had considered having the police 34 <br />officers wear cameras while on patrol. Police Chief Kinney stated this was a new program and 35 <br />additional manufacturers were coming out new camera models. He indicated the department 36 <br />would continue to monitor this technology. 37 <br /> 38 <br />Council Member Mueller asked how vandalism in apartment complexes should be handled. 39 <br />Police Chief Kinney stated the department was not able to provide temporary surveillance 40 <br />cameras. He encouraged the local apartment complex managers to set up their own systems to 41 <br />assist with deterring vandalism. 42 <br /> 43 <br />Mayor Flaherty questioned why the numbers were up in the City of Mounds View.
