These incidents involved: 2 assists to medics, 4
disorderly conducts, 1 false police report, 1 assault, 1 possession of stolen property, 1 theft,
and 1 graffiti incident. From those cases, 3 juveniles were petitioned to court, 4 were referred
to the diversion program, and 1 case is pending review by the County Attorney. In addition to
daily functions at the school such as being a police presence in the hallways and building
positive relationships with student, the SRO also handled a variety of incidents that did not
require a case report such as the following:

• Assisted deans with using the school security cameras to locate incidents of theft,
bullying, or class skipping
• Provided bike locks to students in need
• Deescalated students in crisis
• Counseled parents and students on cyber bullying and fighting
• Conducted home visits to truant students and transported students to TRY(suspension
program)
• Assisted with the spring severe weather and fire drills
• Counseled parents on dealing with out of control kids
• Assisted in locating lost and recovered stolen property
• Assisted investigators with cases involving students.
• The SRO also served as an advisor to the school Building Operations Committee and
Deans and Administration meetings.

Several school staff and parents mentioned how thankful they were to have the SRO at the
school to assist when 2 students required medical attention. One student suffered an asthma
attack and the SRO was able to provide oxygen immediately for the student. Another student
slipped and hit his head, knocking himself unconscious. The SRO was able to quickly arrive
and provide updates to responding paramedics.

The SRO dealt with a couple unusual incidents towards the end of the school year. Five 6th
graders gained entry into the school cafeteria after hours and stole snacks. The SRO was
able to catch all the students involved and refer them to the diversion program. The other
unusual incident involved a 6th grader who brought $1000 in cash to the school and began
handing it out to classmates to pay for supposed “lost bets.” The SRO was also able to
recover the $1000 in cash and return it to the parent.

The final day of school ended the year on a sour note when the SRO had to respond to
several disorderly students on the buses. The disorderly students were promptly removed
from the buses and several were subsequently petitioned for disorderly conduct.
One highlight occurred when the technical education students who constructed the dog
house were able to meet K-9 Niko. Officer Erickson and Niko came to Edgewood to thank the
students for building such a wonderful dog house.
