03/28/94 09:52 FAX SEH ST. PAUL 0002/002
• ,504 MEMORANDUM
x ST.PAUL.MN a MINNEAPOLIS.MN 0 ST,CLOUD.MN C CHIPPEWA FALLS. WI 0 MADISON,WI
TO: Mary Saarion
Director of Parks, Recreation and Forestry
City of Mounds View
FROM: Steve Campbell
DATE: March 23, 1994
RE: Mounds View, Minnesota
STH 10 Pedestrian Crossing at Long Lake Road
SEH No. A-MOUND9406.00
In accordance with our recent conversation,we have reviewed the cost of an elevated (bridge)
pedestrian crossing versus the cost of an underground (tunnel) crossing for the subject project.
The estimated cost of a standard pedestrian bridge is in the range of$700 to$800 per linear foot.
• The material cost of an 8'x10' box culvert which would be required for a pedestrian tunnel is
estimated to be$650 per linear foot. The additional cost of tunneling associated with the culvert
installation is estimated to be $400 to $500 per lineal foot, resulting in a total installed cost of
$1,050 to $1,150 per lineal foot for the pedestrian tunnel.
In addition to the higher construction cost, the tunnel crossing would require additional costs
for lighting, security and drainage systems. With the additional cost of these systems, the.tunnel
cost would likely approach twice the cost of the bridge crossing.
We would, therefore, strongly recommend that the City continue to pursue the bridge option for
the proposed crossing. If you have any questions, please call me at 490-2067.
do
