PARENTAL LEAVE <br /> 0 Eligible employees will be provided leave of absences up to 12 work weeks for the birth or <br /> adoption of a child (including any necessary court appearance), or for the placement of a child in <br /> foster care, in accordance with the Family an Medical Leave Act. The Parental Leave may begin <br /> at a time designated by the employee but must start within 12 months of the date of the birth, <br /> adoption of placement of the child. Prior to the City granting parental leave, benefits eligible to <br /> the employee under Family and Medical leave shall be used first. In no rent will the <br /> combination of Family and Medical Leave and Parental Leave exceed six months. <br /> Notice <br /> When the need for a Parental Leave is foreseeable, such as the expected birth, adoption or <br /> placement of a child, the employee must provide the City with at least 30 days' notice. If the <br /> exact date of the birth, adoption or placement is unforeseeable, the employee must provide notice <br /> as soon as practicable. <br /> Employees who have been employed for the previous 12 months and have worked more the <br /> • <br /> 1,040 hours but less than 1,250 required under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act are <br /> eligible for six weeks of unpaid leave under the Minnesota Parenting Leave Act. Parental Leave <br /> under the Minnesota Parenting Leave Act must begin within six weeks of the birth, adoption, or <br /> placement of the child in foster care, unless the child is hospitalized at birth. Employees are <br /> io <br /> responsible for all insurance premiums during such leave. Parental Leave may not be extended <br /> by use of other forms of paid leave. Return to work is administered in the same way as with <br /> other Family and Medical Leaves. <br /> POLICY: MISCELLANEOUS PAID/UNPAID LEAVES <br /> 4 Approved By: Federal, State, City Council Section: 230 <br /> Revision History: 1992, 1997 Page: 1 of 4 I <br /> Bone Marrow Donation Leave (MN §181.945) <br /> Employees who works an average of 20 or more hours per week may take up to 40 paid hours to <br /> undergo medical procedure to donate bone marrow. Verification by a physician of the purpose <br /> and length of leave is required. If there is a medical determination that the employee does not <br /> qualify as a donor, the paid leave taken prior to the medical determination is not forfeited. <br /> Vacation, sick leave and holiday time will accrue during the leave. <br /> Emergency Leave <br /> In cases of serious emergency, including death or serious illness in the employee's family, as <br /> listed in funeral leave, or other emergency of a serious nature, a regular employee's Department <br />• Head may authorize use of sick leave benefits for such absences up to a maximum of three days <br /> for each emergency.
