Mission and Vision Statements signed by Council and staff, would be
signed by members of the community. It could represent a community
"buy in" to a unified cooperative approach to the future of the
community. And, it could all begin with the Council's initiative at
the Teambuilding.
Regardless of what approach we take for the Teambuilding, it is
very important that the workshop take place prior to the Strategic
Planning Workshop. While Mayor Linke, Councilmembers Quick,
Blanchard and Hankner have worked together before, Councilmember
Trude, myself and several other members of the staff have never
worked with the new team that will come into being on January 3rd.
Functioning as a team, recognizing that differences are good and
differing opinions don't have to be negatives, are essential to the
success of the Council and the success of the staff's abilities to
help you achieve your individual and collective goals.
I have been in contact with an individual who has a long
professional history of working with group dynamics to achieve a
team-oriented approach to decision-making and inter-personal
relationships. His name is Bruce Christopher. He has conducted
workshops for several organizations, including the June LMC Annual
Conference and the City Manager and Assistants organizations. Diane
Wuori attended the LMC session and was very impressed with him.
I have attached his proposal for the Teambuilding Workshop. Today,
I spoke with Bruce about conducting the Meyers-Briggs. That will
not be a problem, in fact he has the latest, computerize version
and will do an in-depth analysis. His proposal also includes
meeting with each member of the Council prior to the Teambuilding.
The cost of conducting a Teambuilding is $1, 800 for a 6-8 hour
session. This includes the Meyers-Briggs analysis and is a $1, 100
reduction in the fee he has charged other cities. The 1995 Budget
provides $2, 000 for the Strategic Planning Worksession. The cost
for that Workshop is $1, 500. The Budget does not provide for the
additional cost of a separate Teambuilding WorkSession. The cost
would have to be paid out of Contingency or a related fund.
I will place this item on the December 5th Work Session agenda. I
wanted to outline the basic proposal to you in advance so you would
have time to "mull" it over. If ydu would like the opportunity to
meet Bruce prior to your decision, I could arrange to have him
attend the Work Session. He is an extremely entertaining and bright
man who can work within the group setting in a humorous yet
insightful manner.
A suggested date for the Teambuilding Workshop is January 6th.
 4 Z
