Parks, Recreation and Forestry Dept.
Quarterly Report
Page two
FORESTRY:
Forester Rick Wriskey says that there was more diseased trees in Mounds View this
year than in the past several years and he doesn't know why. Many trees were removed
because of Oak Wilt. Rick tried trenching methods on a few occasions to try to save as
many residential oaks as possible. It is hopeful that this procedure is successful. In
addition to fighting Oak Wilt, the Forestry crew has been supervising the planting of
trees to finalize the Long Lake Road improvement ,ro'ect. Replacement trees were
planted with MSA monies. Another project that Rick has been working on is the
replacement of diseased boulevard trees with new trees. This project is funded with
grant monies.
CABLE TV:
Cable TV programming continued even though we were in transition during most of
this quarter due to employee changes. Jerry Skelly Jr. and Dale Irving continued to
work throughout the transition times and for this we are very appreciative. Sue Henry
is our new Cable TV Technician/Producer. She and the Cable TV Committee hopes to
go forward and continue to provide programming for Cable TV channel 16.
GOLF COURSE:
The month of July was wild with activity at the golf course. Golf Course staff did not
have time to ease into the procedures, but instead jumped in with both feet running. In
retrospect, the only thing that was a problem was the computer/register system that
didn't work. We tried that system for the month of July and labored terribly with the
system. Although it was promised to have the "bugs" worked out, we finally gave up on
the system at the end of July. In it's place we installed a standard register system, with
financial reporting performed by the Finance Department, who have been so patient
and willing to assist in this process. Thanks to Dorothy and Kitty and Mary T. The
new register system has increased Clubhouse moral, has simplified the process and is
less expensive than the original computer system.
Golf Course maintenance personnel changed in September when Mike Mueller left for
Penn State University. In his place is John Hammerschmidt who has taken on course
projects, maintenance and winterization. In addition, John has implemented programs
including hazardous chemical compliances, emergency procedures for chemicals,
equipment maintenance records, and inventory lists.
Golf Course rounds have exceeded predicted numbers. Preliminary statistics of this half
a season of golf operations seems to be as expected and in several cases exceed
expectations.
