Program The Mounds View School District and Mounds View Police Department have participated in the D.A.R.E. Program since 1990. I, Officer Baumgart, am currently serving as the D.A.R.E Instructor at Pinewood Elementary School. I am both pleased and excited at the opportunity to teach 5th graders about the dangers of drug use. The D.A.R.E. Program was first started in Los Angeles in the early 1980'S and is now used throughout the United States to teach school children not only drug awareness, but self confidence, self respect, and the assertive skills necessary to resist drug abuse. Saturn Corporation of Saint Paul is contributing to the D.A.R.E. Program by providing an opportunity to purchase a used vehicle valued at $15, 000 through a special promotional finance package. This D.A.R.E vehicle will be a highly visible community sponsored symbol that the children can relate to as on-going positive reinforcement of the D.A.R.E Program. This vehicle would be used by the Mounds View Police Department for teaching, for our new community oriented policing program, and other D.A.R.E. related activities. The financing package includes the following: $15, 000 Value of vehicle $ 5, 000 Donation by Saturn of Saint Paul $10, 000 Balance needed from community donations GOAL: $5, 000 Down payment by March 21, 1995 (delivery date) $ 1, 000 Cash donations collected to date $ 2, 350 Commitments (postdated checks for 4-15-95) $ 3 , 000 Sale of vehicles (confiscated and retired) $ 6, 350 I would like to ask for your approval of this project and for a short term contribution from the City to meet the $5, 000 benchmark for the release of this vehicle from Saturn.
