dependent upon the weather. We were lucky to have nice warm
temperatures before holiday break, but is was not so conducive for
making ice. Anyway, we are "in the pink" now and humming at the rinks!
****** Another special word of thanks to Councilmember Quick, his son
Mike and Ernie Lepore for flooding Groveland Park Ice Rink during the
holiday weekends. This really gave a boost to the establishment of the
rink, because even though the cold weather was very good for ice
making -- I chose not to call in overtime for the crew on Christmas
weekend. The flooding job is not an easy one when done by hand. It
requires plowing and sweeping and flooding the rink (a pretty large area)
using old clumsy fire hoses -- the in cold with slippery underfooting while
holding a pressurized water hose. I just can't express our appreciation
enough. "THANKS!"
RECREATION
Mary took some time off before Christmas, I took the week after
Christmas and Sharie took this week off. So, we haven't seen each other
as a "family" since the week before Christmas! We'll have to become
reacquainted upon her return. Ha!
During vacation I did a lot of skating with my children and we tried to visit
as many rinks as we could around the area. I can say that our rinks rank
among the better ones around the area. My son has begun mites
hockey -- oh no! Actually, although I have heard rumors of horror stories
connected with hockey associations, I am so very impressed with the
program. In fact, I am stealing some of the literature that I have received
from the association and incorporating it in with our coaches training
packets. The coaches that Ben has (4 dads) are very, very encouraging
and helpful, taking more time with those with less skills than those with
greater skills which include their children. The association is very
concerned with safety. It has been a good experience for me.
