Mary is to be congratulated for marketing adult competitive volleyball,
having 6 power volleyball teams (competitive) and 7 fun teams. Since
purchasing the new equipment last year, we are now able to market to
the adult players.
We have found a new group of participants that we are offering more
classes to. That is the age group K-2nd graders. This group of children
must be quite large in the area, and they are "starved" for activity. It is
the age before children can be eligible for IBA basketball. However, we
found that a small basketball program on Friday evenings during the Fall
filled to capacity so fast that we had to postpone a whole group of
people until winter. It is a matter of not enough time available in the
gyms to accommodate the large numbers. This Fall premier used parent
coaches, approximately 8 in all, 2 for each team. Because the children
had few BB skills, that was the main emphasis. In fact, they never got to
the point of playing a game, but did enjoy little skill competitions so that
they felt that they were playing while really developing their dribbling,
shooting and passing skills. We are determined to offer more activities
for this age group, although feel hindered by lack of facility space now
during the winter months. The boot hockey program is for this same age
group, being held at Hillview Park.
We have a new cross country ski instructor, Luann Throndson, who also
teaches for St. Paul and other cities. She will be offering instruction with
2 indoor meetings at Random Park and then heading out to the trails at
Silver View for the remaining sessions. If you haven't tried cross country
skiing, you should. It is a great Minnesota winter sport for the whole
family, all ages.
We are taking registrations for winter activities, most to begin the weeks
of January 10 and 17. Mary and Sharie are busy finalizing last details,
meeting with instructors and confirming arrangements.
Staff is also working on arrangements that will allow us to take credit card
registrations, using Master or Visa. This is a customer service item
adding convenience for registrations. Some cities already have this
service. We would like to have it ready to go by Spring registration time.
Mark Malone is working with us on this project.
