Mounds View City Council August 24, 2009 Regular Meeting Page 12 Clerk-Administrator Ericson updated the Council on the discussion of the Charter Commission 1 and a potential tenant on the water tower (Clearwire). 2 3 Mayor Flaherty noted the water tower is in need of painting, which may cost $700,000 to $1 4 million so funding needs to be planned and, perhaps, the rental funds can be used for that project. 5 Public Works Director DeBar stated the water tower was inspected and it was determined that a 6 total rehab may be needed within a year. When properly applied and inspected, the new paint 7 could last up to 20 years depending on paint color and the environment. 8 9 Clerk-Administrator Ericson advised that Public Works Intern Ryan Johnson has decided to go 10 back to school and resigned his position. Staff evaluated the position and recommends another 11 intern be hired who may already have GIS training and experience. Public Works Director 12 DeBar reviewed the work undertaken by the Public Works Intern and benefit of taking advantage 13 of GIS for electronic (paperless) records management and mapping to increase efficiencies. In 14 addition, it will help with utility locates. He noted the 2010 budget contains funding to hire a 15 consultant to set up base mapping and staff recommends hiring an intern to create and build the 16 base map. 17 18 Following discussion, Council consensus was reached to direct staff to draft a resolution to 19 continue the Public Works Intern position. 20 21 Public Works Director DeBar reported that the street reconstruction projects are ahead of 22 schedule. Contracts for Trail Segments 1-5 construction should be signed within a week and 23 construction commence just after Labor Day. Public Works Director DeBar reported that no 24 appeals were received on the storm sewer project. 25 26 Finance Director Beer advised of upcoming budget considerations. 27 28 Community Development Director Roberts commented on the recent issue of the Mounds View 29 Matters and contribution by Economic Development Specialist Heidi Steinmetz in completing 30 this publication. 31 32 C.
