is responsible for any charges related to removal and reinstallation of radio
devices as well as all freight charges associated with shipment of defective
AND receipt of replacement radio devices. The replacement radio devices
will only be warranted for the remaining period of the original radio device’s
warranty period.

Battery Comparison

The Neptune R900radio reader

The Neptune R900 is comprised of one D sized lithium battery, with a
capacitor. The capacitor evens the draw on the battery, which extends the
life of the battery. The Neptune R900 radio device with a constantly
transmitting reading of 100 milliwatts of output power, every fourteen
seconds, is rated for 20 years. The battery for the Neptune R900 is field
replaceable, thus when the battery fails, City staff can replace just the
battery, not the entire radio reading device, at a substantially lower cost.

The Itron 60 Watt radio reader

The Itron 60 Watt battery is comprised of two A cell lithium batteries. The
previous generation of Itron’s 50 Watt radio device also had two A cell
lithium batteries. Based on literature they supplied to the City 4 years ago by
a vendor selling the Itron system, the 50 Watt radio device had a
transmitting reading of one milliwatt of output power which was broadcasted
every three seconds and an estimated battery life of ten years. Now the
newest Itron 60 Watt radio reader has a transmitted reading of
ten milliwatts of output power broadcasted every seven seconds and has an
estimated battery life of twenty years. Based on this data, Staff finds this
claim somewhat suspect.

The battery for the Itron 60 Watt radio device is not field replaceable.
Therefore, when the battery fails, and it will fail, City staff has to replace
the entire radio reading device.
