As part of that
project, a 48-inch diameter trunk storm sewer was extended north of Belle Lane
along the eastern edge of the Pinewood Elementary School site, where it
discharged into the existing wetland. The storm sewer pipe used in the
installation was made of high-density polyethylene material (HDPE).
Some time after its installation, problems began to develop with the storm sewer
pipe along the east edge of the Pinewood Elementary School site. The pipe
began to lift, or heave. This was most likely caused by the upward force of the
groundwater table acting on the pipe, combined with a very small amount of
material covering the pipe.
A map showing the general location of the issue is included with this report for
reference.
2000 – First Record of Problem
By 2000, a portion of the pipe had lifted out of the ground. In July 2000,
representatives from Iowa State University reviewed the pipe as part of a
research project. Their letter of November 6, 2000 concerning the condition of
the pipe is included with this report for reference. They found the portion of
exposed pipe contained a 75-inch long crack, up to approximately 1/8 of an inch
wide. They also found that a joint between two pieces of pipe was beginning to
separate.
