* Playground leaders have been selected and hired. Three new leaders
have been hired this year to replace three leaders that have just graduated
from college and are in the full time job search. We will miss them but
in turn are excited to have three new people with fresh ideas and
enthusiasm
I am very proud to announce that eleven of the fourteen Summer
Playground Leaders are Mounds View residents. The three non-residents
live just over our southern border in New Brighton, and are neighbors of
the Woodcrest Park participants. In addition, three volunteer Junior
Leaders have applied to assist in the programs. They are all ninth
graders who have a dedication to community service - great kids!
I think that the Community can be proud of these people, who dedicate
their summers to the youth of our community - with ambitions of passing
on the experiences and joys of summer recreation experiences. This is a
very important factor in establishing Community Spirit, one that the
Council can be proud of. The City of Mounds View is providing
valuable employment experience to the young adults of our community.
And, in return, these residents are offering the youth of our community
valuable experiences and mentorship that is so important in the
development of youth (as clearly identified in Peter Benson's research
regarding youth assets). Most of the playground leaders have grown up
in the community, attending Mounds View District schools, and are
former participants of the programs which they are now leading.
FORESTRY:
* Rick has been leading planting activities with Pinewood School this week.
Hundreds of pine seedlings have been planted by the school children,
mostly in Greenfield Park. In addition, Rick has been planting bareroot
trees which have been left over from the tree sales.
CABLE TV:
* Jerry have obtained an information tape on integrated systems of
communications. This tape will be shown to staff, but it is available for
Council members and others interested. The possibilities will be further
discussed at budget time if not sooner.
Mary S.
