3.
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION Agenda Section:
94-1184WS
STAFF REPORT Report Number:
6-2-94
AGENDA SESSION DATE June 6, 1994 Report Date:
DISPOSITION
Item Description: Discussion of Request for Variance, Major Video Concepts, Planning Case
No. 384-94
Administrator's Review/Recommendation: .
- No comments to supplement this report w ,
- Comments attached.
Explanation/Summary (attach supplement sheets as necessary.)
SUMMARY;
Major Video Concepts, Inc. has made application for a variance to allow 262
square feet of signage at their proposed facility in Mounds View Square
Shopping Center. The Municipal Code only allows 100 square feet of sign
area per business occupant of the Shopping Center.
The applicant proposes to install a wrap-around awning sign on the
Southeast corner of the Center (the old Country Club Market site) . The
total text area on the awning would be 238 square feet - equally split
among the two facias. Additionally, a 24 square foot neon illuminated sign
is proposed for the Southern face of the building - bringing the total sign
area to the aforementioned 262 square feet.
I have included all materials submitted by the applicant for consideration
of this request including a brief description of the business and a spec
sheet on the awning and sign construction. The applicant has also
submitted color drawings of the awning and sign; however, they are not
reproducible, so I will be hand-carrying them to the meeting Monday
Evening.
The Mounds View Planning Commission reviewed this request and denied the
proposal at their June 1, 1994 meeting. For your information, I have
attached Resolution No. 387-94 which outlines the Planning Commissions'
findings. In addition to the action taken on Resolution No. 387-94, the
Commission, by motion, asked Staff to make the Council aware of their
willingness to grant a variance for 185 square feet of sign area. The
Commission felt that based on the sign area currently being utilized by
another tenant within the same complex (Budget Liquor) , a variance allowing
a similar size sign was reasonable.
If you have any g.ue ns, please call.
/01
!
